Route Description
A big forest-gravel loop from Yarra Junction, climbing through fern gullies and tall eucalypts before dropping back to Warburton and returning on the rail trail. Britannia Creek Road leads into Mount Bride Road, Blacksands Road and Big Creek Road, with Starlings Gap making a useful picnic and toilet stop. Brahams Road brings you back towards the valley, followed by Woods Point Road and Riverside Drive into Warburton.
Allow a full day for the 64.8 km circuit and roughly 1,218 m of climbing. Around three-quarters is unpaved: mostly smooth forest gravel, with some punchy gradients and most of the climbing in the first half. A gravel bike with 38 mm or wider tyres and low gears is a sensible starting point; loose surfaces, fallen branches and wet conditions can change the ride considerably.
Carry enough food and drinking water for the forest section. Starlings Gap has picnic facilities and toilets but no reliable drinking water. Warburton, around 56 km, is the main resupply stop: Silva Coffee, Warburton Bakery and Cog Bikes & Brew are handy before the rail-trail run home. The ride also uses public roads, including short highway sections; expect vehicles and ride to the conditions.
Start and finish in Yarra Junction. For a train-based day, the Warburton Rail Trail link from Lilydale adds about 30 km each way. The Ada Tree is an optional extension from Brahams Road, adding roughly 16 km of riding plus its walking access; it is not included in this loop. Before setting out, check current forest access, seasonal closures and fire conditions through DEECA’s More to Explore service and VicEmergency, and obey signs on the ground.
